You are here:Shop / Licencing Policy
The free Basic version has an internal "switch" to turn itself into the more powerful Pro version. You can activate this switch with a user code you receive from us when you register; you don't need to download new software and install new programs if you have the Basic version. Just enter the code, and that's it.
You can receive two different types of code from us:
- universal codes: These codes have your department or chair as user name. These codes are valid on all computers and can be installed as many times as you have purchased licenses.
- hardware specific codes: These codes have your personal name as user name and only work on your computer.
Isn't a hardware specific code a nuisance?
Honest customers pay for thieves. From our point of view this is the biggest nuisance in software business, because most companies take that into account and raise prices.
We think that we've found a way to keep our prices low without harassing our honest customers.
Working on more than one computer
A lot of our customers want to work in the office as well as at home. No problem here. If you order a single licence of Bibliographix, you will receive two codes - not one.
Buying a new computer
If you buy a new computer, your old code will not work anymore. Just send us an E-Mail and we will send you a free replacement code. But only as long as you do not buy new computers once every week ;-)
Isn't there a long-term risk with hardware specific codes?
Literature databases are long-term projects in many cases and will run on several generations of computers. With our concept, though, you are not at our mercy.
Using the export function you can transfer your data any time in one of the supported bibliographical standard formats, which you can import with other software. Bibliographix is not a dead end for your data.
Should we discontinue Bibliographix (which we don't intend to do) one of the last things we will do is to send a universal code to our customers as a farewell present. Remember: Bibliographix also accepts universal codes, which are not restricted by the lifetime of your current computer.
Do hardware specific codes spy me?
We need two pieces of information from you: your name and a four digit number that Bibliographix determines itself. With this data we create the code. The four digit number is hardware information that does not tell us anything about the contents of your hard drive. This is not our business and - frankly - we don't care.
